Story
Hellboy and a rookie B.P.R.D. agent in the 1950s are sent to Appalachia, where they discover a remote community dominated by witches and ruled by the sinister local demon, Crooked Man.. It is said to have a budget of $20 million, which is the smallest of all four adaptations. Reverend Watts: It’s dark down there. Our introduction to Hellboy, and probably the vast majority of the general public, was the 2004 film directed by Guillermo Del Toro, which gave the comic book franchise a push into the mainstream. Hellboy felt right at home in the hands of Del Toro, who launched a second « Golden Army » film; in 2008. Although both were generally well-received and modest box office successes, a third Hellboy film starring Ron Pearlman (as Hellboy) and Del Toro never came to fruition—rebooting instead in 2019 with David Harbor in the role the titular half-demon hero. .To be fair, despite a good performance from Harbour, I wasn’t a fan of the action-packed, gratuitously violent reboot, – mostly due to the comparative superiority of the first two Del Toro versions that handled both Hellboy and his colleagues' themes of alterity and self-acceptance, which proved more appealing than duplicating action and gore. The reboot ultimately bombed at the box office and was met with generally negative reviews, leaving the franchise dormant.

Now 5 years later, in its fourth live-action iteration, this Hellboy movie is primarily the only one with Mike Mignola, the creator himself. It is also the most faithful adaptation of the source material chosen « The Crooked Man ». It also has the lowest budget of any live action film and the shortest running time of just 1 hour and 36 minutes. against a host of explosive and flashy blockbusters – these include the previous three Hellboy films. But with an understandably smaller budget, the creature special effects could use a little more polish.

We appreciate that the rest of the film prioritizes the use of practical effects Jack Kesy, who plays Hellboy, at least for this variant and theme, actually dresses the character well. The rest are described as they are in the comics and are largely based on how people like the source material – which is great for us, but may leave a lot to be desired for the general viewer. Maybe if this was the first Hellboy movie. then maybe there’s some leeway for more praise and less negative comparisons to, ultimately, Del Toro’s best films though. However, we’d argue that it’s above the overall 2019 reboot experience and stands out uniquely as a slow-burn horror piece where you might look less scared knowing you’ve got ‘Anung Un Rama, Son of the Fallen « .
