On October 11, 1975 at 11:30 p.m., a fierce group of young comedians and writers changed television forever. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes that f… Read all. Matt Wood stars as John Belushi in Saturday Night, check out the rest of the cast and their real-life co-stars. Dan Aykroyd was the only member of the original SNL cast to read the script. During the broadcast, John Belushi enters the venue 39 seconds late through the door. In fact, he went right in. Jim Henson: The writers tied a belt around Big Bird’s neck on the seventeenth floor and hung it on my dressing room door. Michael O’Donoghue: Hey Jim! I heard about Big Bird. I’m so sorry. Autoerotic drowning, who would have thought? The movie opens with a quote from Lorne Michaels: « The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready, it goes on because it’s 11:30. » Appears in Eddie Murphy’s Hollywood roi noir (2023). As someone who grew up with Saturday Night Live (SNL) playing in the background most Saturday nights, it’s no surprise that I developed a deep affection for the show thanks to my parents. Over the years, the format and its inherent talent have continued to evolve. Even though I’m part of the era with names like Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, and Tina Fey, I’ve always fondly remembered the classic episodes. There are sketches from decades past that I still re-watch because they are so iconic. Naturally, all of this made me curious about the movie Szombat este, which is now in cinemas. And if you’re a fan of the series, especially if you’re old enough to have seen the original cast in the 70s, you should check it out. Most people watch Saturday Night Live as a lighthearted, easy-to-watch movie. But many people don’t know how chaotic and stressful it was getting the show on the air, especially in the early days. The film delves into the behind-the-scenes madness leading up to the premiere episode on October 11, 1975. Ninety minutes before the broadcast, the set was still unfinished, people were fired, mistakes were made everywhere. It was a whirlwind of confusion and stress, and the film puts you right in the middle of it. From the moment you step onto the set, the energy is undeniable as everyone rushes to get everything ready. It’s an exciting ride without a single dull moment. Directed by Jason Reitman, Saturday Night is his best work since 2009’s Up in the Air. Its director fills the film with a kinetic, almost frenetic energy, perfectly capturing the chaos of a live production on the verge of collapse. The cast delivers outstanding performances, each embodying the high-octane tone that Reitman has clearly established. Dylan O’Brien portrays Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith captures the essence of Chevy Chase, and Nicholas Braun balances two different characters impressively throughout the film. The standout, however, is Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, the mastermind behind it all. LaBelle, who was also solid in Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, really shines here, giving a standout performance that carries the entire film. Michaels’ performance is captivating, he almost completely takes over the film, with only a few scenes where he is not the center of attention. Now, while Saturday Night does a great job of capturing the essence of its characters and inundating the audience with humor, it has one notable flaw: it reinforces the authenticity of how it all played out in just 90 minutes. While the movie isn’t meant to be an SNL set piece per se, I couldn’t help but feel that the story ends a bit abruptly.
